Remember, this is the Fifties. Dad wasn't supposed to do the shopping. He was supposed to earn the money and spend his weekends doing manly stuff.

What kind of kid is going to waste his chance to influence parental buying on bread? I mean, with all those sugar cereals to nag for!

My mom didn't drive, so when my parents moved to suburbia in 1962, just about every Saturday Dad got a big shopping list. So for me, asking Mom might have got it on the list, but volunteering to go shopping with Dad was the key!

Yeah, Dad was always good for getting things that Mom wouldn't let us get.
